Celadon, the glaze of the Song dynasty

Celadon is one of the great glazes of Chinese ceramics, and the pale, jade-like celadons of the Song dynasty (960–1279) are still seen as its high point. The color comes from a trace of iron, fired in a low-oxygen kiln. A small change in heat turns the glaze muddy or yellow, so a clear, even blue-green is hard to achieve and rare to find.

The pieces

  • Towering Cloud tea set: a 230 ml teapot, a 200 ml fairness pitcher, four 40 ml cups and saucers, in a silk brocade gift box. A complete gongfu set and a centerpiece.
  • Cloud Celadon Jade Tea Cup: a 120 ml (4 oz) cup made with Song dynasty techniques. The clean glaze lets a tea's color and aroma come through.
  • Rice Harvest mug with lid: a generous 18 oz (550 ml) mug with a relief of rice ears under the glaze and a carp-topped lid, stamped by the Anta Kiln.
