Effects

About these effects

These are the effects people most often report from this tea. Bodies differ, so treat them as a common guide rather than a promise — most people notice at least one, but what you feel is personal.

Energy Blissful Calm Stress Relief

Georgian Oolong - the top 2% of the 0.02%

The modern Georgian Tea industry mostly produces the popular black and green teas most people might know, however, the country produces relatively small quantities of oolong tea. Only 2% of tea is turned into oolong, and the Republic of Georgia accounts for roughly 0.02% of global tea production - in a sense this is like a "holy grail" for oolong tea aficionados. This particular offering is the Kolkhida (ქოლხიდა) cultivar expertly crafted into a green, strip-rolled oolong tea. The result is a beautiful, refreshing cup of tea that has notes of stone fruit, melon, and a light buttery profile with hints of honey.

Georgian oolong vs. Japanese oolong - a rare side-by-side

Oolong is rare in both of these tea-growing countries, which makes this a fun comparison. Our Japanese "Miyazaki" Oolong comes from Kyushu, Japan, where less than 1% of tea is made into oolong, and is crafted from the rare Minamisayaka cultivar. Our Georgian "Flower Garden" comes from the cool, humid hills of western Georgia, the most northern tea-growing region on earth, and is made from the Kolkhida cultivar. Two different countries, two different cultivars, and two very different terroirs, yet both are fresh, crisp, easy-drinking oolongs that make a great introduction to the category. Brewing them one after the other is an easy way to taste how cultivar and place shape an oolong.

Notes from Staff:

This tea makes a lovely impression on people who are not as familiar with oolong. It has such a gentle but memorable taste profile, and it leaves your palate with a gentle finish that makes you just want more! We recommend to try sampling this tea alongside our Japanese Miyazaki Oolong which shares similarities. The Georgian Tea is more floral, and the Japanese more fruity with a buttermilk note, and strong mineral hints - at least to us. Judge it for yourself!

Old Mountain Tea Guarantee

Our teas are guaranteed free from harmful chemicals. We source directly from small, clean family farms that take real pride in their work — no middlemen, no anonymous blends. Many of these teas are bug-bitten, and leafhoppers only feed on gardens grown without pesticides, so the leaf itself is living proof the garden is clean. Most of our teas are certified organic (USDA & EU), and every tea is traceable to the farm that made it.

Origin & Terroir

Cultivar

About this cultivar

Kolkhida (ქოლხიდა)(also spelled K'olkhidi) was named after the Kingdom of Colchis, a legendary place known in Greek Mythology as the setting for "Jason and the Golden Fleece." The tea cultivar was created in Georgia during the Soviet period, likely around the early-1900s. A sturdy tea cultivar, strong enough for cold winters and changeable weather, it was developed to grow reliably and produce a good crop.

Status

About this status

The rarity of this tea comes from 2 factors, the unique Georgian Terroir, and oolong tea being a more time-consuming process. Within the country of Georgia itself, oolong tea accounts for a very small portion of domestic tea production and is very difficult to find in a local shop. Precious small amounts ever make it to International or Overseas markets.

Oxidation level

What oxidation level means

Oxidation is what turns green tea into oolong or black tea — as leaves are bruised and rested, enzymes react with oxygen and deepen their color and flavor. Green tea sees almost none; oolong ranges widely; black tea is oxidized fully.

Picking style

Why picking style matters

Hand-plucking means workers select each bud and leaf by touch, one at a time — far slower and more expensive than machine harvesting, but gentler on the leaf. As labor costs rise, fewer gardens still pick this way, making hand-plucked tea increasingly rare.
