An extremely limited batch of hard-to-source authentic Taiwanese Mountain Pepper, the very spice the native peoples of Taiwan call "Maqaw".
Maqaw (馬告), or Taiwanese mountain pepper, is a wild aromatic spice native to the mountain forests of Taiwan. Long treasured by the indigenous Atayal people, its tiny peppercorn berries carry a bright, unmistakable aroma; somewhere between lemongrass, fresh ginger and cracked black pepper.
Maqaw is used extensively as an everyday spice by Taiwan's native communities, and seen as a defining feature of local cuisine. Most "mountain pepper" sold online is of unknown origin and not considered true Maqaw. Ours is sourced directly from a remote village in the Atayal highlands of Taiwan.
Naturally caffeine-free and versatile, maqaw can be steeped as a refreshing herbal infusion or used as a citrusy seasoning for soups, meats and marinades. Its highly aromatic lemony compounds also lend well to baking. A little goes a long way.
Wild-harvested whole sun-dried berries.
Due to very limited supply, only small quantities are available.
